There are places you visit, and there are places that stop you where you stand. Victoria Falls is firmly the second kind.
The Zambezi arrives broad and unhurried, then drops into a basalt gorge along a front more than a kilometre wide. The spray rises high enough to be seen from a long way off, which is how the falls earned the Sotho-Tswana name Mosi-oa-Tunya, the smoke that thunders. In full flood the noise is constant and the rainforest on the Zimbabwean side receives its own permanent rainfall from the spray.
But the waterfall is the opening chapter rather than the whole book. Victoria Falls is a river destination, a wildlife destination and, for a certain kind of traveller, an adrenaline destination. You can spend a week here without repeating yourself.
Why come here
The falls themselves. The rainforest walk on the Zimbabwean side gives you a series of viewpoints along the length of the gorge, from the Devil’s Cataract to Danger Point.
The river above them. The Zambezi upstream of the falls is wide, calm and full of life. This is where our own sunset cruises operate.
The gorge below them. White water rafting, bungee from the bridge, the gorge swing and zip lines all happen in the Batoka Gorge, seasonally and subject to river conditions.
Wildlife on the doorstep. Elephant, buffalo and antelope move through the surrounding national park land, and Hwange and Chobe are both reachable.
Everything is close together. Victoria Falls town is small. You are rarely more than a short drive from whatever you have planned.

Practical information
Getting here. Victoria Falls Airport receives regional flights, and Livingstone in Zambia and Kasane in Botswana are both close alternatives. We can arrange transfers from any of the three.
Getting around. The lodge runs a 24-hour shuttle into town for a small fee. Most activities include collection from your accommodation.
When to come. The falls are at their fullest roughly between February and May, when the spray can obscure the view from close range. Lower water later in the year opens up the rock face, and is also when gorge activities and Devil’s Pool are more likely to run. There is no bad time, only different versions of the same place.
Crossing to Zambia. The Victoria Falls Bridge links the two countries and both sides can be visited in a day. Immigration requirements apply.
